Come and Try Team Racing
May 21 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
This is a ‘low key come and try it event’ with the emphasis on fun, getting to sail the know the Fireflies and how team racing works.
The plan is to field between four and six teams. Each team will comprise three boats (three helms and three crews). For this first event.
What do you need to do?
If you would like to take part, all you need to do is contact Richard at firstname.lastname@example.org
If we have a large up take then don’t worry, all we’ll do is create an additional team to accommodate the numbers.
Then what Happens?
Once individuals who want to take part have been identified we can allocate them on the day into teams. Each team will have a team captain, familiar with how team racing works. We plan to send all those who a expressed an interest in participating an online video that succinctly explains the rules of team racing.
In addition, nearer the time, also plan to hold a zoom call to explain the format of the day and run over the basic rules – but the main aim of this event is an introduction to team racing and for everyone to enjoy themselves.
Finally, team captains may wish to get their team together in order for people to get used to the boats and have some practice prior to the event. This could be on the Saturday morning before racing. Fireflies are deep hulled boats and can accommodate a range od weights, although it is probably best if the smaller individual of a pair acts as crew.
Costs and format of the day
The event is intended to be partly social, partly fun and partly sailing. We plan to have refreshments on hand and some food.
Typically, the average team race takes between 10 and 18 minutes with the maximum time on the water at any one time being about 30 minutes (two back-to-back races). As a consequence, there will be a great deal of swapping in and out of boats and time to relax on shore.
Cost £10 plus a small charge for food tbd.
